Traditional Fiji food is similar to the other South Pacific islands but it also has its specific features. Among the dishes which are really worth trying there are Kokoda (fresh fish, marinated in lime juice and served in coconut cream), Palusami (taro leaves, filled with coconut cream, onions and tinned meat), Duruka (a local vegetable, which tastes like asparagus). Kava is the traditional drink of Fiji, drunk at almost any occasion. Many years ago Kava was prepared only by virgins. They chewed the root of the pepper and then added some water. Nowadays modern technologies are used. The locals prefer to drink Fiji Bitter (a beer brewed in Suva).
